DJ Preach English Interview

Since he burst out on the scene back in 1996 Canadian Phillipe Babin, better known as DJ Preach to hundreds of thousands of fans around the world, has been spreading the message of electronic dance music to the masses.

Having released tracks on such a diverse collection of imprints such as Primate, High Contrast, Oxygen, Armada, Ultra Records and Ministry of Sound, with the support of industry luminaries such as Carl Cox, Tiesto and Marco V, Preach is about to release his brand new track ‘The Bailout‘ on his very own label Relic Recordings.

I got the chance to catch up with Preach despite his hectic schedule to ask him a few questions.
 

1. How did your love for electronic dance music start?

I gotta give all credits to my sister for that, I was barely 12 years old the first time I got to listen to EDM. She brought me some tapes from the ‘james brown is dead’ and some other acid house hits, I got hooked right away. I started producing my own tracks also quite early, at the very begging of the popular BBS / Internet time.

2. What are some of your favourite studio equipment/hardware/software?

I changed a bit my setup recently, I use now virus & waldorf on ableton with some of the most recent vst pluggins and of course my precious UAD-1 mastering tools J

3. Any specific production of yours that you consider being your breakthrough track?

I think my tune ‘broken inside’ on Tiesto’s label really got me into my new sound. People knew me as a straight techno dj from the years 2000’s but they know that I play a wide range of sounds now. I don’t want to limit myself to techno only, I love trance and progressive as well.

4. Who have been your main influences throughout your career?

Anything but electronic music! I really try hard not to listen too much to electronic music otherwise I loose my mind, its just too much producing and playing. I love a lot of bands, some of my favourites are pink floyd, u2, cold play, radiohead of course and some other recently The Killers (older albums) and Keane maybe sometimes. I love hiphop too, I think it really helps me clean up my head from all the banging stuff!

5. You have been DJingfor more than a decade now. You’ve also been releasing music on some of the biggest labels in the dance scene. What made you decide to release on your own label again?

To tell you the truth i have had enough working with other peoples labels, i have decided to focus on my own label and invest in something that i know will be working the way i want it. Ive had loads of great opportunities over the years releasing my music on some of the best labels around, in fact Carl Cox and Marco V were the first 2 guys to really believe in me and support my sound worldwide. But at this point in my career i dont see the reason anymore to cover myself under someone else’s name to try to get some attention on the scene, i think with the combined effort of my team we can make Relic Recordings unique by promoting a new futuristic sound. A sound that has already proven itself on the dancefloors worldwide in 2008. Also you have to know that there are alot of sharks in this business and i have been robbed a couple times with licenses and records sales… in fact one of the biggest labels (I won’t name) has gone bankrupt sometime ago and we have never got paid for any of the licenses on the big compilations and i won’t even talk about record sales… by the way my biggest seller of all time. It’s just strange that this label was backed by one of the richest dj in this scene…

6. Your new release on Relic Recordings is called ‘The Bailout’. What is so special about this release?

I like to release something every 2-3 months, i think people get fedup fast with tracks these days and you gotta keep them updated with new tunes as much as you can. This release ‘The Bailout’ is to commemorate the recent events on wall street. Some of us (including myself) lost alot during the last months and obviously its not only happening in the USA. Many people think we shouldn’t mix music and politics, well in my opinion we have had our share of bad news recently with politicians and i think it’s time we get implicated. People will find a wide range of genres on this release , from a progressive house remix to trance remix, we ve made it accessible to your taste. I’ve been really inspired over the last months by the work of Sander Van Doorn, i think he brought a new generation of producers doing something different than the usual trance. I have added to it my own funky rhythm, for me this is the future of trance. The tracks are already supported by the likes of Carl Cox, Marco V, Sander Van Doorn and Marcus Schulz. Dont miss the artwork also, the greedy wallstreet broker getting his ass kicked on the sleeve! 

7. Could you tell us a little about your recent trips as a DJ?

I’ve been busy this year as usual but i must say it has been quite different overall than my previous years. When i moved from Montreal a couple of years ago I was mainly playing Spain and Holland but things have change alot for me in 2008. I’ve started playing some of the best venues in the UK and also all around Canada (From East to West coast). Which is great because it made me discover the wonders of my own country, god it’s so BIG! I wanna talk about the UK because it has been a revelation for me this year, especially with Goodgreef and their crew. I had my own pre-conception of the UK, I mean it’s where alot of djs became hugely famous… so that made me kinda nervous at the begining because I knew I had to deliver big time. Also the attitude of people is quite different than many other countries I’ve visited, they are old school and that’s quite rare to find. At least in the parties I played I’ve seen a younger generation of clubbers/ravers dressed like back in days when i started (1995)… It reminded me why i got into this 13 years ago; the spirit! 8. Recently you also became a father to a beautiful daughter, how do you add something as huge as fatherhood into your already very busy schedule?

I have to say i am really suprised how me and my wife deal with that. I think it has been so tuff on us the last 2-3 years because of the non stop travelling that this became just as a way for us to settle down together in one house and take it as “a pied a terre” and not just float around all the time between Europe and Asia. I still accept all my request for gigs around the world but i wont go away for a few weeks like before, I’ll make it a shorter trip and make the best of it in a few days instead of spreading it all. It’s just about getting organised. Our baby girl is so beautiful, for me it’s the best thing that could have happened this year. I’m going to fight for her and bring her what she needs whenever she needs it. Not only it has given me motivation to work harder as a dj and producer but it has taken me into a much more meaningful way of living. I don’t know how to explain, I’m sure all fathers feel the same way as I do. By the way I’m not off the booze because of that.

9. Where is Preach taking us in 2009?

Nothing less than 2008, in fact my diary for 2009 is already set until summer time. We have a big tour coming up in the Americas, starting from March I will be touring South America, Central America and North America with over 30 cities on the bill. I also dont want to miss WMC but then again i don’t know if there will be time. Hopefully i will be there for the Fire It UP night with Eddie Halliwell that should be pretty crazy. For the first time also i will be touring the Eastern Canadian coast. I’ve been there a couple of times but that will be different next year as I’ll l be spending 2 weeks over there to cover the clubs and parties of the maritimes. In total I should be covering about 100 000 miles in 3 months. I will be back for the summer gigs in Europe from June so stay tuned for that. Also my radio show ‘Transatlantic‘ is going better and better we’ve had already since the begining over 25 guest djs from around the globe, our radio broadcast is growing bigger as well.

Interview de DJ Preach en Français

DJ Preach est un de nos fidèles habitués. Après une première interview en 2006 et une seconde en 2007 à l'occasion de la sortie de son album Transatlantic, DJ Preach nous accorde à nouveau un entretien pour nous parler de ses projets et de sa nouvelle sortie The Bailout.

TheClubbing.com: Hello Philippe, nous nous retrouvons un an après ton album Transtlantic dont nous avions parlé lors de notre précédente entrevue. Peux-tu nous dire un peu ce qu'il s'est passé pendant cette année d'écoulée?

DJ Preach: L'année 2008 a été un véritable tournant dans ma carrière. Jai toujours été très connu dans le monde de la Techno mais un grand changement dans ma vie m'a poussé à faire évoluer mon son et revenir à mes racines de la Progressive Trance ainsi que de la Techno. Je joue toujours dans certaine soirée exclusivement Techno à travers le monde mais maintenant je suis aussi ouvert à toute la scène Progressive et Trance. Pour être honnête, j'en avais un peu marre d'être enfermé dans un seul style et les fans de Techno sont souvent très fermés à tout ce qui dépasse leur son.
Le milieu de la Trance est totalement différent. La clientèle est tout d'abord beaucoup plus importante mais aussi beaucoup plus ouverte à d'autres courants musicaux. En gros maintenant, je joue tout ce qui me plait, tout ce qui sonne comme du Preach. On retrouve un peu le même schéma dans mes productions. Je produis un son que personne ou presque n'a, une mixture entre la Trance et la Techno avec des groove parfois minimalistes et Electro. Je dirais que ces six derniers mois ont été les meilleurs de ma vie. J'ai joué dans quelques-unes des meilleures soirées et ça se voit dans mon attitude. Je suis beaucoup plus positif et énergique derrière les platines. Je m'occupe d'ailleurs maintenant d'une émission de radio chaque semaine qui est diffusée sur beaucoup de station FM, Satellite à travers le monde.
J'y invite des DJ du monde entier ainsi que de nombreux nouveaux talents. J'ajoute également chaque semaine une nouvelle vidéo sur ma page web qui montre un peu la vie de DJ et aussi des clubs et soirées où je joue. Je suis d'autant plus heureux que les réactions sont pour le moment excellentes!

TCB: Tu qualifies toi-même ce dernier track Progressive Trance et Progressive Techno comme un des tes morceaux le plus personnel que tu aies produit. On sent d'ailleurs à l'écoute que ce style de correspond parfaitement, est-ce ce silence d'un an en matière de production qui t'a permis d'aboutir à ce type de sonorités?

DJ Preach: Pour ainsi dire, je n'étais vraiment pas silencieux depuis le début de l'année 2008. J'ai eu beaucoup de sorties mais sur des labels que mes anciens fans ne suivent pas beaucoup. J'ai eu deux gros disques cette année sur le label de Ferry Corsten, notamment supportés par Judge Jules, Paul Van Dyke, Sander Van Doorn, Eddie Halliwell et bien entendu Ferry. En fait, je crois que ce changement m'a amené dans un tout autre univers et je m'en rends compte maintenant que beaucoup de nouveaux fans croient que j'arrive pour la première fois. C'est un peu comme un renouvèlement, ça fait du bien après 12 ans de Techno pure. Ce nouveau disque est aussi dédié aux récents événements de Wall Street. Beaucoup de mes potes et moi-même avions des actions dans les marchés boursiers américains J'aime avoir un concept derrière chacune de mes sorties. Celui-ci est amusant, sur la pochette l'homme d'affaire de Wall-Street sen prend plein la g**** sur le ring.

TCB: A ce propos, toujours soucieux de satisfaire tes fans ainsi que les autres DJ, tu nous proposes avec cette sortie des versions additionnelles, quelles ont-été tes inspirations pour ces versions supplémentaires?

DJ Preach: Je ne compte plus sur un seul style pour définir le son Preach. Maintenant les gens savent que peu importe où je vais, je jouerai une musique qui s'adaptera a la piste de dance tout en gardant mon étiquette. J'avoue aimer jouer hard et ca c'est quelque chose que personne ne pourra m'enlever. En offrant plusieurs versions d'une chanson, cela permet de satisfaire toute les occasions pour les DJ comme moi jouant dans toute sorte de soirée. Presque tout les DJ que je connais sont versatiles, je pense que c'est plutôt rare maintenant les DJ qui se colle à un seul genre. J'ai aussi deux remix de mes grands amis et producteurs que j'admire. Wehbba a fait une version Tech-House magnifique qui est déjà supportée par plusieurs DJ de la minimale à Tech-House. De plus Miko, originaire du Maroc, a fait un remix plutôt Techno Deep et Détroit qui se marie parfaitement avec les précédentes sorties de Relic.

TCB: On connait les talents des producteurs Wehbba et Miko, mais qu'est ce qui a fait que tu fasses appelle à eux pour tes remix?

DJ Preach: J'aime faire découvrir des talents comme je l'ai évoqué précédemment. Pas uniquement des talents mais aussi des personnalités, des mecs qui sont passionnés et qui poussent de tous les côtés pour faire avancer la musique. Je connais Miko depuis des lustres, c'est un très bon ami et Wehbba, lui de son côté, est une star montante de la scène minimale Techno et Tech-House. Il a déjà produit sur quelques-uns des plus grands labels comme Great Stuff et Kompakt.

TCB: J'ai entendu dire que tu souhaitais produire une compilation que tu distribuerais gratuitement aux fans, qu'en est-il? Est-ce toujours d'actualité?

DJ Preach: Jai encore envie de le faire mais le temps me manque pour tous ces projets.

TCB: Des projets pour le futur?

Je suis en train de préparer une tournée mondiale avec Eddie Halliwell pour la sortie de mon prochain disque en 2009. Je suis très excité par le projet car j'ai collaboré sur ce projet avec un chanteur américain et ca déchire . Il y aura bien entendu une version bien hard et dark pour les adeptes du Techno. Sinon 2009 s'annonce très chargée, je vais en tournée partout en Europe jusqu'en mars et ensuite j'irai en Amérique pour une tournée d'est en ouest comprenant le Canada, les USA et bien entendu également en Amérique latine. Je souhaite revenir juste à temps pour les festivals en Europe! J'espère faire mon retour en Belgique et en France très bientôt d'ailleurs!

DJ Preach: En fait, je suis déjà papa si je comprends bien ta question. Depuis maintenant 8 semaines, je suis papa. Cela a donné un sens à ma vie et je suis si heureux. Occupé comme un fou mais vraiment heureux comme jamais!
